How does pigmentary abiotrophy of retina occur?

The photoreceptor cells - rods and cones – are responsible for our eyesight. These cells are filled with different pigments, and they form so called visual epithelium of the eye.

There is only one pigment in the rods. Due to the rods we see in the darkness. At bright light they are responsible for perception of blue colors. The cones contain several different visual pigments. Some pigments percept green color, others- red, the third ones- yellow. In the darkness the cones almost do not act, that’s why our night vision is black-and-white.

Different pigments respond to light in different way: so the brain receives the information about the color and the amount of light around. But in the result of chemical reaction to the light, pigments themselves become discolored. Normally, spent colorless pigment is excreted from the cells. In case of tapetoretinal degeneration the mechanism of excretion is breached, the pigment, insensitive to light and color, accumulates, and photoreceptor cells fail to fulfill their function.

The rods suffer first, that’s why this disease was once called cone-rod retinal dystrophy.

For tapetoretinal dystrophy, classical medicine cannot yet offer an effective way of pigment removal from pigment epithelium. To improve the blood supply in pigment epithelium, usually metabolic drugs are assigned. But with time the power of the gene begins to prevail over the possibilities of the drugs, and in the result, blindness progresses.
